The system of monitoring through the latest camera fitted on the uniforms of the traffic police (known as ‘body worn cameras’) has been introduced on a trial basis. This system would be extended throughout the state of Tamil Nadu. The vehicle drivers have offered full acceptance and cooperation for this.

In order to prevent any verbal arguments and tiffs between the vehicle drivers and the traffic police, the traffic police officials have introduced a system of monitoring by fixing ‘body worn cameras’ on the uniforms of the traffic police on a trial basis.

In the 1st Phase of this system implementation, single body worn camera has been distributed to the traffic police inspectors in the North, East, West, and South regions.  The traffic police inspector needs to wear this on the uniform while carrying out the inspection process.

This latest camera will capture the vehicle drivers in a clear way. The conversation between the vehicle driver and the traffic inspector will be recorded clearly. Even talking from a distance of 10’ to 15’ would be recorded very clearly. The camera can rotate by 360 degrees. It can record continuously for up to 15 days. GPS device can be fitted to this camera.

A decision has been taken to set up a central control room for this system to monitor the video recordings. Video recording cannot be done during the nights. There is a special technology feature in this camera which enables it to recapture the recordings if some video clips were deleted by the concerned traffic police inspector where he has been guilty of mistakes. This feature was explained by the Chennai Traffic Additional Police Commissioner Arun,

These cameras are to be distributed to the 67 traffic inspectors and 248 Assistant traffic Inspectors in the Chennai Metro City. The traffic police officials informed further that a camera each would also be distributed to the 15 Traffic Detective department police who collect the data regarding accidents and road protests.
