On Sunday 11th of February 2018 all roads led to the famous Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar Chennai. It must be noted that at this place around 400 doctors grabbed the eyeballs of many. A rally was held by these doctors plus students and members of public on spreading awareness on Rubella. This Rubella is a viral infection that causes many congenital abnormalities is well known.
DCP Mr Rohit Nathan played his part by inaugurating the ‘Walk’ that was organized by International Inner Wheel and Dr Mehta’s Hospitals.
The students who took part in the walk did superbly by displaying English plus Tamil banners and play cards on this Rubella and its effects. The students also displayed the importance of vaccination against this Rubella.
It is worthy to note that the central government had introduced last year measles-rubella vaccine in the immunisation programme of the government. Parents wanted this programme to continue longer though the programme was to end in the month of February.
It is confirmed that this Rubella or German measles is a contagious viral based infection and it creates reddish rashes on the infected people. Infected mothers could pass this Rubella to their kids plus it also passes from the infected to others through sneezing and coughing.
This Rubella must be considered seriously because congenital Rubella syndrome is responsible for causing deafness plus blindness in the newborns. According to the statistics it is now confirmed that 2 lakh children in India and around 2000 children in the state of TN are born deaf, blind or with heart or brain damages due to this Rubella.
It must be noted that vaccines play an important role because they could be used to check congenital infections of atleast 40 to 50 per cent. This was later confirmed by the officials. A single dose of this Rubella vaccine is said to be 95 per cent more effective.
