The Chennai Metro city Corporation officials confirmed the stopping of the Property Tax collection of Property Tax as per the recent cancellation. The state government of Tamil Nadu has not revised the rates for Property Tax for the last several years.  The Chennai High Court objected to this and ordered that the Property Tax be revised upwards. Subsequently, the state government of Tamil revised and released the order for the new Property Tax.

However, the public took a strong exception to the recently revised Property Tax and objected that the revision as compared to the previous Property Tax was quite steep. They further complained that in several cases, Property Tax has been levied without proper evaluation/calculation and collected as such!

This protest continued with more than 10000 Property Taxpayers submitting a petition to the court objecting to the recently revised property tax.

Developments

As a result, in order to address this issue raised by the public, a special committee of 23 members was formed under the leadership of the Chennai Metro City Corporation Assistant Commissioner.

In this scenario, the Tamil Nadu State Government Minister for corporation administration and water distribution, S. P. Velumani announced a few days ago that this recently revised Property Tax is withdrawn and a committee of 4 members has been formed to review the issue of the revision of Property Tax.

Accordingly, the collection of property tax as per the canceled rate has been presently stopped. The Chennai Metro City Corporation Officials have informed the public can now pay the Property as per the old system.

It has further been emphasized that the collection of the arrears payment of the Property Tax as per the old rates must be expedited.

The Chennai Metro City Corporation has collected a total revenue of Rs. 602 Crores in the 1st half of the financial year 2019-20. Further, it has set a target of Rs. 1350 Crores as Property Tax for the current financial year.
