With the rapid and ever-expanding Chennai Metro City with increasing population every month and the astronomical increase in the number of 2,3, and 4-wheelers, severe traffic jams are encountered daily in several places in the city. The public as well as the vehicle drivers are thus put to great hardships including loss of time.

Out of the various reasons for these acute traffic jams, one of the most important reasons is the unauthorised parking of vehicles on the roadsides!

In order to prevent this illegal parking of vehicles, the Chennai Metro City Corporation introduced the Smart Parking System  while allotting funds of Rs. 7 Crores for the same.

The related activities to implement these smart parking schemes are in full swing. As such, it has been announced this scheme is to be implemented on 20th December (Friday).

During the 1st Phase of implementation, the Smart Parking System is set to be introduced in 17 roads in the Chennai Metro City including Anna Nagar, Besant Nagar, Purasawalkam, Thiyagaraya Nagar, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, and Wallajah Road.

In these 17 parking spots, there is a space to park a total of 5532 cars. Out of this, 20% has been allotted for 2-wheeler parking and 5% for the vehicles of differently-abled persons.

In order to prevent the vehicles being stolen from in these smart parking lots, 460 cameras have been installed in these 17 parking slots.

For parking 2-wheelers, the charges are Rs. 5 per hour. For the 4-wheelers, it is Rs. 20 per hour.

This payment can be made through credit/debit cards. Or otherwise, the App ‘GCC Smart Parking’ can be downloaded, the cell number registered  and can be used.

Though this scheme of the GCC (Greater Chennai Corporation) is rather welcome, the vehicle drivers observe that much more awareness must be made among the public for the best utilisation!
