In a move to prevent the congregation of anti social elements at the Marina Beach, the Chennai Corporation has started to install high mast lamps to better illuminate the area.  Additonal lights will be put up at the cost of Rs. 60 lakhs.

Kannagi Statue, Ayothikuppam, Nadukuppam service road, Nochikuppam and Foreshore Estate will have one high mast lamp each. Two lamps will be installed on the sands of the Marina Beach near the swimming pool. At the moment, there are 24 high mast lamps between the lighthouse and the triumph of Labour statue.

While the installation will improve the level of safety at the Beach, wildlife activists are apprehensive about the move.’ Marina is already full of mast lights. Every single hatchling will be attracted towards the light. During nesting of turtles the lights are normally switched off in many areas’, said Akila who is a volunteer with Students’ Sea Turtle Conservation Network.
