Flapping of eyelids is traditionally considered a foreboding in the traditional Indian culture! There are faiths that flapping of the right eyelid is a good omen for males and the flapping of the left eyelid is good for females!
However, science deems that the flapping of the eyelid may be due to the shortage of nutrition! This phenomenon of eyelid-flapping is known as ‘MYOKYMIA’!

The experts observe the the flapping of the eyelid, upper or lower part may be due to mental stress, fatigue, eye-problem, excess intake of caffeine, taking alcoholic beverages, drying of eyes, lack/shortage of nutrition, and allergy!
They observe that most of the complaints may be due to mental stress. Will practising yoga, or meditation, or spending time with friends and relatives reduce mental stress and cure eyelid-flapping?
They observe that complaints such as shortage of sleep, mental stress, anxieties will all affect the eyes first! They observe 7-8 hours of sound sleep every night is a MUST!
Keeping on looking at the mobile or the laptop/desktop computer monitors for continuous long hours increases the work-stress on the eyes! This excess workload on the eyes may lead to the eyelid flapping. To prevent this, they recommend that the eye must be diverted to some other direction every 20 minutes – close the eyes for a few moments every 20 seconds once!
Some persons can have problems in the tear-glands. When the tear quantum is insufficient; it may lead to irritation in the eye. This may further lead to complaints such as the flapping of the eyelid.
The medical experts also cite that shortage of nutrition in the diet may also be one of the reasons. They say that shortage of Magnesium may lead to eyelid flapping! So, they recommend that a balanced diet with proper nutrition content may help prevent this complaint!
If the flapping of the eyelid is felt infrequently once in a long while or feeling the eyes get drawn to one side is not an issue!
