Cyclones and floods have become quite common in Chennai in the monsoon season and people find it extremely tough due to these natural disasters.

Now, with northeast monsoon nearing, GCC has come out with a plan to prevent these natural disasters. Information is that on Wednesday GCC had released City Disaster Management Perspective Plan 2021.

Vulnerability of different parts of Chennai to disasters would be identified by this new plan and the pan would specify the minimum standard measures to adopt for prevention and mitigation of natural disasters.  It must be taken into account that as per this plan Chennai Corporation has formed a relief committee with the commissioner of civic body as chairman. Various members are Chennai collector, metro water executive director, joint commissioner of police (traffic) plus chief engineers of highways and rural works and PWD etc.  The committee would try to evict encroachments on regular basis to maintain free flow of water and they would play their part in identifying vulnerable roads, subways, levels crossings inside the Chennai corporation limits that would get inundated during heavy rains.

There are as many as 306 chronic inundation locations in Chennai and 37 of those are very highly vulnerable and 84 highly vulnerable. In 20201, the number of chronic inundation locations came down to 23 and these have been mentioned as low vulnerable spots.

It was mentioned that Chennai was only drainage basin for all the water bodies located in the 2 adjoining districts near Chennai. It is now revealed that this plan would also involve private sector to strengthen disaster resilient investments through structural, non-structural and functional disaster risk prevention and reduction measures in vulnerable places. It is known that GCC has joined hands with private sectors to restore water bodies. Truth is that as per this plan GCC has signed MoUs with various NGO`s and the private sector.
