Many people will be visiting Thakkar Baba Vidhyalaya in Chennai this weekend for this reason!!
If you belong to Chennai, then don’t be satisfied with common vegetables like carrot or potato or radish etc that you come across every day because this weekend you might be witnessing some superb veggies like purple yam, arrowroot, air potato etc under one common roof.
Get ready to witness Chennai’s first ever Roots and Tuber Festival and this would be organised by ASHA-TN or Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture and Safe Food Alliance. Thakkar Baba Vidhyalaya and Sahaja Samruddha would be playing their roles too.
There are also tubers beyond potatoes and radish etc and the main objective of this festival would be to create awareness in the public regarding tubers available around us. Mr. Gopi Devarajan of Organic Market Farm spoke about how there are many types of vegetables available and how they would provide us with lots of health benefits. It would be possible to shape the entire season diet depending on the tuners available in that season. This would be shown to the public visiting the festival.
He added that Sahaja Samruddha is a farmers group in Karnataka and this kind of festival was an annual affair in Mysuru. It is true that from Mysore only we get various types of tubers. In TN, only a few farmers cultivate tubers. It is important to note that by this festival Chennai residents would come to know about the tubers even more. Point is that ASHA-THN is another organisation that works in the propagation of organic and safe food practices. After the festival, tuners would be available in the organic markets also for the people.
By this festival, the farmers would also be highly benefited as they would get in contact with those who have interest in the tubers etc.
