Many vehicle owners these days opt for fancy numbers instead of randomly issued numbers. Hereafter, getting fancy numbers for the vehicles would cost more.

There is now huge demand for the fancy numbers and the state government has now increased the cost of the fancy numbers. It is learnt that the cost for booking fancy numbers for vehicles would double. Now, vehicle owners pay from Rs 2000 to Rs 2lakhs to get their preferred numbers for their vehicles.

The Home department has proposed to increase the fancy number fee amount  between Rs 2000 and Rs 8lakhs and this was according to the draft amendment to the TN Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.

It must be noted that many vehicle owners are very particular that their vehicle registration numbers must show their date of birth or some auspicious dates or numerologically significant numbers etc. This was according to an officer belonging to the transport department.

The vehicle owners could apply to the RTO concerned if he or she wants a particular or fancy number and that would and if that falls within 1000 numbers from the current series or the last registered numbers etc. He then spoke about how for the imported cars and other vehicles etc the allotment of fancy numbers through the registration authority would cost Rs 2000 to Rs 80000.

The TN government has reserved about 100 vehicle numbers in the range 0001 to 9999 as special numbers. Truth is that these fancy numbers cannot be obtained through RTOs but can be obtained by paying a special fee amount  ranging between Rs 80000 to Rs 8lakhs.

The fancy numbers 9999(amongst the TN govt reserved numbers) is highly sought by many vehicle owners. It must not be forgotten that former CM of TN Dr MG. Ramachandran had cars with fancy number 47777 marking the date 4th July 1977 when he was sworn in.
