Chennai is celebrating its 384th year now. On this special occasion, the Green Tamil Nadu Mission has joined hands with Nizhal NGO and Rotary to organize a tour yesterday. Point is that the tour covered native tree species and exotic non- invasive species etc.

Who all participated:

It is learnt that there were nearly 30 participants: school children, college students and some senior persons. By this Heritage Trees of Chennai tour, the participants came to know about the  history of the Chennai city. It is well known to us that the trees stand up as a testament to the changes the Cghennaic ty has witnessed for many decades.

Mr. TD. Babu of Nizhal has confirmed that this was the first ever tour that was organised in Chennai  to mark Chennai day. He spoke about how the tour covering the heritage structures was conducted  in Chennai as a part of the celebrations. He added that in the early days trees were landmarks of the localities but buildings have replaced them now.

Tour beginning and ending:

It was from the Indira Nagar Park in Adyar (where a huge butter tree is present)  the tour started on Sunday. Not many would know that there is a baobab tree (a native of South Africa) present inside the Andhra Mahila Sabha premises. In addition to this, there`s one more tree present inside the Egmore Museum also but garden waste and wooden slabs have been around it. It must be taken into note that this type of abuse would weaken the tree as the trunk of baobab is 79% of water.

The participants also witnessed neem trees, Indian Mahogany and Button trees etc and these trees belong to TN. At Queen Mary`s College, the tour came to its close yesterday. It is known that in this college there is vajram maram, an non-invasive exotic tree having the hardest wood.
