The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a weekly citywide cleaning drive to clear garbage and debris, particularly near water bodies, every Saturday. To curb illegal dumping, the GCC has designated specific areas for construction material waste disposal across all 15 zones.

Here are the key regulations:

1. Violators who dump debris in public places will face penalties.
2. The public must limit debris dumping in allocated areas.
3. Those disposing of less than 1 tonne of construction waste will be fined Rs 2,000.
4. Dumping over 1 tonne will result in a Rs 5,000 penalty.
5. The fines align with the Solid Waste Management rules of 2016 and sub-rules of 2012.

Approved dumping sites for limited quantities of construction waste include locations like Buckingham Canal Road in Sathangadu, Manali Zonal Office, Madhavaram Bus Terminus, Mahakavi Bharathiyar Nagar, and others.

For generators of over 20 metric tonnes of construction waste, the GCC requires sending bulk waste to recycling centers at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur after payment and approval.

Notably, the GCC has already collected 1,060 metric tonnes of construction waste citywide. Since January 2022, fines totaling Rs 1.87 crore have been imposed on those illegally dumping construction waste in public areas.
