Mind-boggling Metrorail Tunnel Work!

Posted on: 20/Feb/2014 10:17:41 AM
For the Chennai residents who travel across all the main roads in the city, the foremost question in the mind is: ‘What exactly is going on with all these partitions?!’

Leaving aside the space allotted for Metrorail work, thousands of vehicle have to move along the limited and narrow space, literally crawling and trying to overtake each other. IF they care to check, they would marvel at the nature of work in progress, especially, tunneling. Yes! Some engineering miracle is happening here!

As the people return home from their offices in the veneing, the work at Nehru Park is in full swing. Workmen are earnestly engaged in the tunneling process for the metro stations.

2 Special digging equipment have been imported from China during last July, 2012. It will take 18 months for the tunnel work for a distance of 950 meters between Nehru Park and Egmore.

Tunneling work is in progress in 2 stages. The approach routes to the station from 4 directions – Kilpauk Traffic Police station, Sangam Theatre Complex, Tamil Nadu Sports Development Centre, and AryaVaidyasalai) is in process. These roads can be used as public crossings as well.  150 Indian and 70 Chinese workmen are engaged.

The Chinese experts feel that this is a challenging project. The project will take a few more months for completion. There are crossings at every 250 metres. There is walking path by the side of the tracks.

As work near Egmore area is completed, equipment is being removed. They will be shifted to Pachaiyappa’s college area for further tunneling work.

The second stage under progress is between Pachaiyappa’s college and Nehru Park.

The foreign workmen felt that this has been an enjoyable experience.
