Power cut imposed on residents throughout the night!

Posted on: 18/Jun/2014 3:00:58 PM
The public is extremely upset about the action of the EB to cut power to residences through the nights in order to provide continuous power to the industrial sector.

The power demand has been more than the generation in Tamil Nadu. In order to count his, a system of staggered power cuts for residences and power restrictions for industries were imposed.

As compared to last year, more power is generated with the new thermal power units at allure, North Chennai & Mettur and also from the wind power stations.

Failed promise that no power cuts from June!

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced on 27th May that there would be no more power stoppages. The existing 90% power cuts for industries between 6.00 PM & 10.00 PM and other 20% power cuts will be removed.

Presently, the severity of summer is not yet abated. This has increased extensive usage of air-conditioners in Chennai & suburban residential areas. However, the power is cut during the night under the presumption of ‘overload’ and the power is cut off from 10.00 PM onwards.

The power cut is more acutely imposed in areas such as Saidapet, Madhavaram, Alandur, Velachery, Saligrama, Bangaru Street, Mylapoer, Mandavelli, Triplicane, Egmore, Anna Nagar, Avadi, and Anagaputjur.

At the same time, continuous power is provided to certain other industrial areas such as Guindy, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyil, and Gummidipundi.

When the power is cut off, the complaints made by the residents are not properly answered about the power cut and invariable keep the phone off, generally by lifting the receiver.

As per a senior EB official, there are 27 Lakhs power connections in Chennai & its suburban areas. Presently, the current of hot air during day & night is prevalent leading to more air-conditioner usage, especially during the nights. With the increased load, the transformers tend to trip due to the overload and overheat causing power failure. If this overheat is not attended immediately, there is the danger of the transformers bursting. Hence, it is inevitable to impose power cuts on rotational basis.
