The Chennai Corporation budget for 2011-12, presented on Tuesday, has left the property and professional tax rates untouched even while continuing with the highlighting on health and education.

The Corporation has planned to introduce a master health check-up scheme, comprising 19 tests — at a nominal rate of Rs.500 — for all at the civic body’s diagnostic centres in Kilpauk (E V R Salai), Perambur, Valluvar Kottam, Saidapet and Thiruvanmiyur.
Chennai Corporation will take medicare to slums with mobile clinics that would traverse the alleys of 1,460 slums of the city. It will also build an old-age home in north Chennai and nine night shelters across the city.
The mobile clinic with adequate facilities will go around the slums. If any slum dweller calls up the corporation helpline, 1913, the service will be at his doorstep.
Class X students of Chennai Schools who secure a centum in mathematics, science and social science would be given a cash award of Rs.25,000. Those who score a centum in all four main subjects in Class XII examinations would be given Rs.50,000 and first three State rank holders in Tamil language from classes X and XII would receive a cash award of Rs.25,000.
- Students who recite all 1,330 couplets of Thirukkural would be given a scholarship of Rs.1,000 per year till they complete their school education. White school uniforms will be distributed free of cost to students of Chennai Schools.
