PPOs at IITs across the country have seen an increase in number and money

The pre placement offers (PPOs) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has seen a 50% increase compared to last year. Many students are set to have job offers at hand before the final placement in December.

IIT Madras has 50 PPOs this year compared to 35 in the same month last year. IIT Bombay has 123 PPOs as against 110; IIT Kanpur 90 compared to 24; and IIT Kharagpur has 142 compared to 92.

Companies in the banking and financial services sector are one of the main employees. They did not make an entrance in the last two years. Big names such as JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Barclays are hiring at the IITs of Madras and Kharagpur. IIT Bombay has employees such as Capital One and Credit Suisse.

The highest placement offer at IIT Kanpur is from Facebook - a whopping Rs. 1 - 1.5 crore a year. Says an official from Amazon, At Amazon we believe that interns are our future leaders. More than 50% of our campus hiring comes through pre-placement offers and would continue to be one of the key areas of identifying and hiring talent.’

Companies such as Samsung India, Adobe, Microsoft, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Flipkart and Strand Life Sciences are top recruiters. A Samsung official says, We believe that internships give both the interns and the organization an opportunity to interact with each other over an extended period of time. This makes it easier for students to decide once they have an offer, as well as assimilate into the organization faster once they join.

The companies making their debut recruitment at the PPOs at IIT are Texas Instruments and JSW Group, American Express, Axsiom, Bentley Systems India, Fuzzy Logix, Innoplexus Consulting Services, Quetzal Online, Glow Homes Technologies, Zimply, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and Capital One. Companies that have been started by old IIT students are also in the fray. Says an official from Axsoim, This time, we decided to visit the IITs to pick up more talent. We visited IIT Kharagpur and IIT-BHU and made 17 offers, of which we will be giving PPOs to nine.

Overseas placements are popular among the students. Says a placement coordinator, We are hoping for an increase in international offers this year especially from Japan, Singapore, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Overall, the (PPO) scenario looks more promising than last year.
