As Kamal Haasan celebrates his 62nd birthday, here are a few lesser known facts about him.

Kamal Haasan made his debut at the age of three and a half. He started in Kalathur Kannamma alongside Tamil cinema greats Gemini Ganesan and Savitri. This 1959 film won him the President’s Gold medal, the first of many many more.

His first film as a hero was a Malayalam one. 40 of his films are in Malayalam.

Kamal Haasan worked with ace director K. Balachander in 36 films. At the peak of his career, Kamal was a background actor for one of the director’s films.

The actor loves to take risky films. His first stint as a producer was for the film Raja Paarvai, which was released in 1981. This was also his 100th film. Critically acclaimed, the film did not do too well in the box office. Reports say that it was 8 years before he recovered from the loss of the film.

In 2002, the actor was detained in the Toronto airport for having an Islamic sounding name. Kamal was in the country to shoot Panchthanthiram. He was interrogated at the airport for a good half an hour.

Kamal Haasan is the only actor who has won the Filmfare award for Best Actor while bring nominated also for the Best Supporting Actor at the same function. The film was Saagar, released in 1985.

Rajnikanth played minor roles and second leads to Kamal Haasan in many of their earlier films. After 1979, during their film Ninaithale Inikum, Kamal and Rajnikanth decided not to work together, to help grown the latter’s career.

At the audio release of Dasavatharam, Jackie Chan was the chief guest. Kamal Haasan had tried to imitate Chan’s stunts in the film and had suffered 32 fractures in the process.
