Tamilnadu Chief minister J Jayalalithaa have announced a series of major drinking water schemes across the state, at a cost of about Rs 700 crore worth on Wednesday.

Including the setting up of desalination plants in drought-hit Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin districts. The plants will have a capacity of 100 million litres per day.

Chief minister said,"since water resources in Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin districts were dwindling and unreliable, such desalination plants were necessary."

Also she announced a series of combined drinking water supply schemes by utilising Cauvery, Kolleedam and Bhavani rivers, which will benefit people in several districts, including Trichy, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode. "All the projects will be taken up this year,"
