Traffic has been heavy from southern districts to Andhra Pradesh and beyond. To ease this traffic, Chennai would get a 62km long Outer Ring Road or ORR. In the first week of November, the ORR from Vandalur to Minjur would be opened as it is on the verge of completion.

In 2014, the ORR from Vandalur to Nemilichery was opened to traffic and this was the first phase of the project. The second phase from Nemilichery to Minjur has been delayed due to issues with land acquisition. As per an officer belonging to Road Development Corporation it was clear that the final bit of the project- 210m stretch is on the verge of completion. This stretch has been delayed due to land acquisition is well known. In November, the entire stretch would be thrown open to the public.

Truth is that the development of ORR was taken up as a part of recommendations made in the first master plan for Chennai for reducing traffic congestion by connecting National Highways to Chennai city.

It is worthy to note that the second master plan identified areas along ORR as potential areas for absorbing the future growth. It is brought out that ORR would play its role in the development of Tidel Park 3 in Pattabhiram and it would generate 25000 jobs.

There would be 4 toll booths in the entire stretch of ORR. Varadharajapuram would have the first toll booth for the road section from Vandalur to Nazarathpet of 19.65kms. The second toll would be at Kolappancheri for the stretch that ends in Nemilichery of 29.65kms. Palavedu would have the third toll booth for the section of road from Nemilichery to Padiyanallur of 47.90kms.

The fourth toll booth would be set up at Chinnamullaivoyal for the section of road from Padiyanallur to Minjur of 60.15kms.
