In more than 6000 state run schools across TN, the state govt has decided to install LAN connections. The main objective behind this would be to increase the facilities in the computer labs for both teachers as well as the students.

It is known that currently the schools have standalone computers and data transfer from one system to another is an issue. In addition, the computers are virus infected also.

In those schools that have more than 10 desktop computers, LAN network would be installed. This was according to a senior officer from the school education department. He spoke about how at present as many as 6029 government schools in TN have more than 10 desktop systems. Point to be noted is that all computers were standalone and teachers would have to upload and maintain each computer. This is a time consuming process.

It is believed that the LAN network would be highly beneficial where both teachers and students would be able to access databases, emails, share documents and print etc with the help of software running on LAN server. The read and write access could be maintained by network administrators by the teachers and/ or headmasters etc.

It is learnt that an IT network firm would be selected by proper tendering process for providing LAN connections across the government schools in TN. As per the senior officer, it was clear that as many as 3090 high and higher secondary schools have 10 computers and 2929 schools have 20 computers. Point is that all the computer labs would have an uninterrupted power supply or UPS system. The selected IT network firm would train the teachers to handle computers once LAN gets installed.

Security aspects would be taught to the teachers and they would provide logins and passwords for each student. Before the coming academic year, the installation of LAN would be completed.
