In Pollachi, there is now a drastic drop in the coconut yield and due to this the prices of coconuts have increased. This is making sensational news now.
It is really shocking to note that from Rs 22000 per tonne just 3 months back the farm gate prices of coconuts have increased to Rs 5000 per tonnes. From around Rs 35 per kg just 2 weeks back, the retail prices of the coconuts have increased above Rs 60 per kg.
The prices of coconuts are expected to rise further in the coming festival season. The reason for this is because it would take a month for the coconuts to arrive from Karnataka. In addition to this, the yields from farms would pick up from January only.
The coconut yield has come down as nearly 40% of the trees were affected by many factors like root wilt disease, white fly issue and high temperatures etc. According to Mr. PK. Padmanabhan, JC of TN Coconut Producers Companies Consortium, yield has stopped totally in 5lakh trees and more than 1 lakh trees were cut down because of infections etc. He added that the prices of coconuts have never reached so high till now. Bitter fact is that this rise in the coconut prices doesn`t fetch the farmer`s big profits as the production has reached a minimum.
Important information is that normally up to 60 loads each weighing 12.5 tonnes used to be produced from Pollachi and Annai malai regions. Now, the produce has reduced to just 10 to 15 loads.
