The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has made significant progress on the Phase II metro expansion, with 40% of the construction work completed. As part of this development, a trial run for the 9-km Poonamallee to Porur corridor is set to begin today. This stretch, considered a key route in the project, is expected to be operational by December 2025.

Key Features of the Phase II Project:

- Total Length: 118.9 km
- Tunnel Network: 50.5 km planned, with 19 km completed so far
- Project Cost: ₹63,246 crore
- Corridor Plan: The expansion will enhance metro connectivity across suburban and central Chennai

Significance of the Project:

The Chennai Metro Phase II project is a crucial infrastructure initiative designed to improve public transportation in the city. With Chennai’s population and traffic congestion on the rise, this project aims to provide a fast, reliable, and eco-friendly alternative for daily commuters.

The Poonamallee-Porur stretch is part of the Madhavaram-SIPCOT corridor (Corridor 4), which is expected to boost connectivity in the western parts of the city, linking key residential and commercial areas. The introduction of this route will benefit thousands of commuters traveling between Poonamallee, Porur, and other major hubs.

As work progresses, further trial runs will be conducted on additional metro routes under Phase II. The full project, when completed, will significantly transform Chennai’s urban transport landscape, providing seamless connectivity, reducing travel time, and decongesting roads.
