Flooding in localities like Anna Nagar and Teynampet in Chennai would be avoided in the future. Thanks to GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation`s latest plan.

The news that has come out now is that GCC has planned to demolish and reconstruct SWDs or storm water drains in nine places in Chennai. An amount of Rs 24.89 cr would be spent on this. This would be a part of regular monsoon mitigation works.

On Friday, 21st March 2025, the local body passed a resolution to reconstruct damaged SWDs to avoid water logging streets in Anna Nagar and Teynampet zones. Point is that 9 streets from these 2 zones have been identified and tenders will be floated soon.

At Rs 4.40 cr in the Anna Nagar wards 103 and 104, construction of new SWD work would be undertaken. It is mentioned that a few wards in the high profile Teynampet zone would also get a new SWD. On Wednesday, in the budget, GCC has allotted Rs 1032 cr for constructing new SWDs.

It is well known that in 2026 state assembly polls would take place and now GCC is concentrating more on the roads and flood alleviation etc.
