To ease traffic congestion and avoid delays, e-pass checks for tourists entering the Nilgiris have been limited to five checkposts from Tuesday. The active checkposts are at Masinagudi, Mel Gudalur, Kallar, Kunjapannai, and Geddai. This move reduces bottlenecks, especially at Nadukani, a key point for inter-state travellers between Karnataka and Kerala.
The e-pass system, made mandatory from May 7, is part of efforts to regulate vehicle inflow into the ecologically sensitive hill district. As per court orders, entry is capped at 6,000 vehicles on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends until June.
Improved mobile connectivity at the five checkposts has made it easier for tourists to register for e-passes, and staff are on hand to assist visitors. Vehicles from Kerala typically enter via Mel Gudalur, from Karnataka via Masinagudi, and from Coimbatore through Kunjapannai, Kallar, and Geddai. District administration and police teams are deployed round the clock to ensure smooth screening.
