The field of science keeps exploring something or the other, especially about human health and being. Just in the list is the sleep one gets. Scientists have now come up with which gene is responsible of taking overall control of sleeping pattern of an individual and the one that sets an internal alarm within oneself.
Karla Allerbrandt and her team from Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich have found that ABCC9 is one gene that stands responsible of reducing the sleeping time in a person. This discovery is expected to clarify how light sleepers like Margaret Thatcher were able to get minimal sleep of just 4 hours.
The study involved assessment of sleeping pattern of nearly 4000 individual volunteers. They were all questioned about their sleeping pattern and habits.
Study results:
According to the study results, those with two copies of a common variant in ABCC9 have shorter sleeping period compared to others who had two copies of another gene version. Presence of the gene in fruit flies was already identified and the scientists tried making modification in the gene. This resulted in shorter sleeping pattern in them too.
