A study published in the journal Diabetes Care has said that a drug that is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes can help cholesterol levels in check. The study was conducted by researchers at Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen and German Diabetes Centre in Dusseldorf.

The blood samples of more than 1800 people were analysed. It was found that the drug called Metformim that was prescribed to those suffering from Type 2 diabetes changed the levels of metabolite in the body. This change led to a lowering of the LDL cholesterol as well. LDL is believed to be the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases.

Say researchers, (We) speculate that Metformin intake affects the levels of LDL cholesterol via AMPK, leading to a down-regulation of the genes FADS1 and 2... (Our) study suggested that Metformin might indeed have an additional beneficial effect with regards to cardiovascular diseases among the Diabetes patients.
