Healthy breakfast options

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Everyone knows that. But, unfortunately, it is also the meal that’s almost always made and eaten in a hurry. Did you know that much of what we eat for breakfast does more harm than good? Here are a few common breakfast foods one must try to avoid.

Be careful about the kind of cereal you choose. Many ready to eat cereals are filled with sugar and carbs. When you eat them, the blood sugar in the body goes up fast and then falls rapidly down. As a result, your energy crashes at the beginning of the day. Avoid sugary cereals and any bakery items. Cereals that contain high fibre and protein are the best alternative. Add flaxseed or walnuts for the extra nutrition.

Packaged foods like do nuts and pancakes are also full of sugar. Instead opt for whole wheat bread and a light butter.

Granola is extremely healthy. But store bought granola has a mixture of honey, sugar, oats and dried fruit actually contains lot of fat and calories. Many boxed granola also contain lot of hidden sugar, unless you`re reading labels and consciously buying an organic or natural variety made with simple sugars. Otherwise, you`re basically eating dessert for breakfast.

It’s so easy to just pick up a packed sandwich from a store on your way to work. Many of these seem to satisfy nutrient conditions. But remember that much of it is processed. The vegetables are not fresh. Instead of buying a sandwich, take that little extra time to make the same thing at home.

Store bought smoothies are full of refined sugar. They contain full fat milk, or worse, cream, so it`s really more of a dessert shake than a breakfast beverage. Instead, blend a healthy version at home using yogurt, almond or skim milk and fresh fruits and nuts.
