If you have been to Siruseri on the outskirts in Chennai, you would have surely come across closely present tall buildings etc. Bitter fact is that there is no free space or lung space available for the public.

Now, the sensational piece of information is that in the future Siruseri would have the much needed lung space. The forest department has taken steps to create a 50 acre forest here near SIPCOT.

In this situation, a tender has been issued to create a forest at Siruseri. Funds from CMDA would be used to develop the forest and it would be carried out by the forest dept. For that, saplings would be planted in the area and benches and walkways etc would be provided to the public. The public would be allowed inside the forest once the project gets over.

The pressures of development have led to the degradation of the forest area near Siruseri and a decision was taken in this situation. At a cost of Rs 5 crore, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Association would create an urban forest on 50 acres of degraded forest area. In coordination with TNGCC or Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company, the above mentioned work would be implemented.

The shocking truth is that Chennai has got just 5.3percent of forest cover with tree canopy density of more than 10%. This includes urban forests, parks, gardens and others like orchards, avenue trees etc. This was brought out by the Forest Survey of India`s state of Forest report 2021.
