Rising Water Levels in Chembarambakkam Lake Raise Flood Concerns

Posted on: 12/Dec/2024 10:30:20 AM

Continuous rains in Chennai and its surrounding districts have caused the water level in Chembarambakkam Lake to rise to 21.18 feet as of Thursday morning. The lake, one of Chennai`s major water reservoirs, currently holds 2,903 million cubic feet (mcft) of water out of its total capacity of 3,645 mcft.

The inflow into the lake has increased significantly, reaching 713 cubic feet. Authorities have indicated that if the water level rises to 22 feet, surplus water will be released as a precautionary measure. This could pose a flood risk to low-lying areas along the Adyar River in Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to manage the water flow and minimize risks to residents. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay alert and follow updates from local authorities.
