TNEB explains how 100 units of free electricity works

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has now come up with a note on when from the consumers will be offered with 100 units of free electricity.

In the AIADMK election manifesto for Assembly Elections, Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha had announced to offer 100 units of free electricity to all consumers. Jayalalitha, right after taking position as the Chief Minister on 23rd May signed this order. As per this, this free electricity unit will be applicable to all meter readings taken after this date, the 23rd May 2016.

An edict for the same is released. At this juncture, there are several doubts and commotions about how this offering will be given. For example, if the meter reading is taken after 30th May, will the customer be eligible for full offer?

The electricity board has divided billing procedures into three categories which are 0-200, 200-500, 500-1100. As per the new free units offer, if the total meter reading falls below 100 units, the consumer need not pay any electricity bill at all.

In their note about this, officials from the electricity board stated that if the meter reading is taken after one month of announcing the order i.e. 23rd May, offer of 50 free units will be given. For example, if the meter reading is taken after ten days of passing the order, the offer will be given based on the number of units used for those ten days. While the offer for one month is 50 free units, calculations will be made for the total number of units for those 10 days of usage.

For consumers who have used electricity for two full months after passing the order, free units of 100 will be entirely given. Consumers can get in touch with the Assistant Engineer at the electricity board close to their residence. So far, 100 units of free electricity is assured for over 28 lakh consumers, said officials.
