It is known that there is a proposal to shift IOCL or Indian Oil Corporation Limited product terminals at Korukkupet and Tondiarpet to Vallur in Thiruvallur district. The point is as a part of this proposal now the preliminary works to lay new pipelines from Ennore to CPCL or Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited refinery in Manali are underway. It is now brought out that the total cost of the project including the laying of pipelines and construction of terminal would be Rs 730 crores.

For many decades now, the terminals have been in operation from the densely populated north Chennai. These terminals receive, store, supply fuel, lubricants and oil. Not many are aware of the fact that these terminals at present cater the fuel needs of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and other neighbouring districts. It must be noted that the terminals are shifted due to orders got from bodies such as National Green Tribunal, Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisations etc. It is necessary to be complaint with the safety standards of the oil industry and the shifting of the terminals is also due to this reason.

Many efforts have been taken to reduce the traffic at the terminals. The point is the number of trucks entering or leaving the terminal has been brought down. There would be dual line connectivity at the Vallur terminal that is one from Chennai port and another one from Ennore port. It is said that IOCL had planned to provide this dual connectivity.

It was pointed out by an official belonging to IOCL that his company would lay pipelines to carry the products from Ennore to Vallur and from CPCL to Vallur. For laying pipelines from Ennore to CPCL, the right of way or RoW has been acquired.

An official explained about how the proposal is under the consideration of the IOCL board and the approval would come likely in 3 to 4 months of time. Once the work begins, it would take 30 months of time to be completed. For petroleum, oil and lubricant or POL terminal, a total of 102 acres of land has been procured at Vallur in the Thiruvallur district.
