Rainfall Update in Chennai by Tamil Nadu Weatherman

Posted on: 29/Nov/2024 8:06:48 AM

A small patch of clouds has brought 20-40 mm of rainfall to Chennai City over the last 1-2 hours. Satellite imagery shows clouding near the Depression, which is still located far away from the Puducherry and KTCC (Kanchipuram-Thiruvallur-Chennai) coasts.

Key Points and Myths Clarified

  1. Kulir vantha mazhai peyyathu

    • It is a myth that rains do not occur during cold weather. When a depression or cyclone forms over the Bay of Bengal, temperatures on the land side drop, making the weather cold even during the day. However, as the cyclone starts to move closer, the warmness will return.

  2. NE poguthu mazhai varathu

    • The northeastward track was only temporary. Directional changes can slow down the system`s movement, causing delays in rainfall.

  3. Pani (dew) irukku mazhai varathu

    • Dew and cold mornings are typical during the Northeast Monsoon (NEM) due to high-pressure breaks. These conditions do not necessarily prevent rainfall.

Cyclone Potential

There is a significant chance for this Depression to intensify into a cyclone as per weather models, with indications of further strengthening expected tomorrow.
