On Saturday, 15th February 2025, the minister of HR & CE Mr. P.D. Sekarbabu was busy inspecting the revitalisation works in Kolathur Lake in Chennai. He had assured that by the end of December revitalisation works of all the 13 lakes in Chennai would be completed. It is known to us that he is also the chairperson of CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
Currently, revitalisation works have been going on in as many as 9 lakes in Chennai. Especially in the Alandur Lake, space for setting up of sewage treatment plants is going on now.
It is worth noting that the revitalisation works in lakes like Perumbakkam, Velachery, Retteri, Adambakkm, Puzhal, Porur etc have been started by CMDA at a cost of Rs 250 crores. As per the minister, lakes are being upgraded so that the residents could use the new facilities for exercises etc. In the future, parks would be developed around the lakes.
Point to be noted is that when the storage capacity of the Kolathur Lake is increased then flooding in the Red Hills area would be avoided. Creation of a drain to this lake has been discussed also. It is surprising to mention that 81 encroachments have been identified along the lake canal. After the provision of an alternate space, encroachments would be evicted according to the orders from the chief minister. The minister Mr. P.D. Sekarbabu concluded that Moolakothalam has been identified as alternate housing.
