The lack of infrastructure for the pedestrian safety on the important routes near schools and hospitals in Chennai has become a huge cause for concern now.

Bitter fact is that pedestrians are finding it difficult to cross roads near the school and hospital zones due to the metro works. It was mentioned that GCC has not constructed facilities for pedestrians. The speed breakers near the schools and hospitals are not properly installed.

The risk of accidents has been increased due to speeding motorbikes especially near the school zones when the students cross the roads. It is now said that the civic agencies should launch a campaign to address the issue. The shocking truth is that the pavements near Jamalia Higher secondary School and Everwin School were not accessible. There is a need for GCC to explore the feasibility of designing school zones in Chennai on the lines of those present in foreign countries.

It was later brought to light by the former GCC engineer Mr. N. Madhavan that the road near Vijayanagar bus terminus had become unsafe for the school kids to cross. He wanted GCC to join hands with Highways dept to create facilities for the pedestrians at vulnerable points.

It was pointed out by Ward 104 councillor that the school zones in Anna Nagar especially near SBOA and Chinmaya Vidyalaya schools do not have enough facilities for pedestrians.

The school zones must be defined clearly and this was according to Mr. K.P. Subramanian who is a former professor from Anna University.
