At a time when Chief Minister J Jayalalitha has announced free 100 units of electricity, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has announced that everyone is eligible for these free units. At the same time, it has also computed the consumption of each electrical appliance.

An official of the Board said, There are 1.96 Crores consumers. All of them are eligible for this scheme. There are 79 Lakh consumers who use 100 units of power for two months. They are paying Rs 60 per month and for two months they are paying Rs 120. Now they not need pay any charges. Charges for those who are using more than 100 units are calculated according to the slab.

Many of the consumers are not aware about their usage of power. For example if we use 60 watts bulb for 5 hours, 18 units will be consumed. But at the same time instead of using 60 watts bulbs if one uses 15watts 2 CFL bulbs, the power consumption will be only 4.5 units. Similarly if we use 40 watts 2 tube lights for five hours, 12 units will be consumed. Iron box of 720 watts if used for one hour every day, the consumption will be 22.5 units. 150 watts powered fridge when used for 12 hours a day, there will be consumption of 54 units. When a 2,650 watts powered air-conditioner of 1,5 tonnes used for five hours, the consumption will be  398 units. At the same time, only 30 units will be  consumed if  one uses 200 watts air cooler.
