From 1st July all ration card holders should handover the copy of Aadhar card at their ration shops. To avert irregularities in the sale of essential commodities through ration shops and encourage paperless transaction, the government has decided to issue smart cards in lieu of ration card.

Now a new system is being introduced wherein the consumer will be able to know the stock position of the PDS shops. Officials of Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs have instructed all the ration shops to collect the copy of Aadhar card and mobile numbers of the consumers. This will come into force from 1st June.

An official of Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has mentioned: In the recent times there are lots of complaints about the irregularities that happen in the ration shops. So in order to avert irregularities in the sale of essential commodities through ration shops and encourage paperless transaction, all ration shops in the district have been provided with the GPS-based Point of Sale systems. The system, functioning with a mobile phone SIM card, will record the quantity of essential commodities dispatched from the godown to the shops, quantity received, any delay in transit etc. After the Point of Sale systems were successfully tested in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, the State government has proposed to introduce the system in all ration shops across Tamil Nadu in a phased manner.

This Point of Sale system will also record the details of cardholders, such as address, number of persons in the family, age, mobile phone numbers, Aadhar number etc. During every sale, the cardholders’ mobile phone will receive from the Point of Sale system an SMS detailing the nature of the sale, quantity, bill amount etc. and hence no bill will be issued to the cardholder hereafter during the sale.
