The Tamil Nadu State Government Department of Food has introduced the facility to download the smart ration card from the internet after making the required corrections if any. This will prevent the necessity of the card-holder to apply for a ‘duplicate’ ration card and go through that procedure.
Base on the details of the Aadhar card as per the central government, ‘handheld’ smart ration cards are being distributed in Tamil Nadu.
After making the corrections (if required) on the details such as family member’s name, additions/deletions, and change of address, etc., there was a facility to get the duplicate ration card from the government e-service centre.
The fee for this service was fixed at Rs. 30. However, the staff in the e-service centres indulged in various negative activities such as charging extra, printing ration cards randomly as per their desire, etc.
Subsequently, the State Department of Food stopped the facility to print and issue corrected ration cards from the e-service centres a few months.
However, the ration-card holders who needed new cards appealed to the state government for the same.
A departmental official explained in this regard that the cardholders can visit the official website of PDS (Public Distribution System) or use the Mobile App, have to enter the same mobile number given while getting the old ration card before the correction. Then, a code number will be sent as SMS. The card-holder can enter this number and carry out the corrections as required. Once received by the department, the correction details will be sent to the cardholder again as SMS.
This request will be approved through the internet itself by the concerned authorities such as Circle distribution officer, assistant commissioner, etc.
In case, errors are found in the details, SMS regarding this also will be sent.
Within a week after the approval from the concerned authorities, The corrected details of the ration card will be stored in the file format of ‘pdf’.
This can be printed and submitted to the concerned ration card offices/centres.
Once the government approval is received, the old system of issuing duplicate cards will be resumed.
