How would you react if you are informed that in the Chennai city Coronavirus infection pandemic is not the biggest concern? Surprised right!!

In most of the conversations, the Coronavirus pandemic has been taking the center stage but Chennai residents do not consider it as their biggest civic grievance. The fact is this COVID-19 pandemic is just the 5th biggest grievance in the city of Chennai.

The data from the Chennai Corporation has shown that garbage removal has been the biggest grievance. It is important to mention here that the number of grievances received by GCC has been almost similar to those in the previous years.

As per the Chennai residents, the redressal has been slow. The corporation has been very busy with the Coronavirus controlling activities and this has been given as an excuse.

The Chennai Corporation had received 1.49 lakh complaints in the year 2018 and in 2019 it received 1.70 lakh complaints. In 2020, from January till August, as many as 65,675 complaints have been received.

It has been brought to light by the data belonging to the Chennai Corporation that the complaints related to garbage have increased from 22,074 in the year 2018 to 31,137 in 2019. In 2020, till now 11,531 complaints have been received. Various other complaints received were absenteeism of sweepers, irregular door-door collection of garbage, etc.

Dumping of garbage in the unused grounds has become common now. It is now mentioned that those who had segregated the waste earlier are not doing that now. In the next month, Spain based firm Urbaser would be starting its work in Chennai and it is now said that this firm would be dealing with the issues and rectification would be carried out effectively.

Garbage collection and disposal would be undergoing many changes once when Urbaser takes over and everything would be streamlined.
