The civic authorities have dug up several roads belonging to Chennai for the purpose of SWD or storm water drains or SWD. This has led to lots of inconvenience to the residents, commuters and to many commercial establishments etc.

It must be taken into account that in few places in Chennai bus shelters, well laid granite platforms and even public toilets have been demolished. Apart from these, even the trees have been uprooted in many places and the residents were upset regarding these. In those roads that have been dug up by the civic authorities, there has been loss in businesses for many stores as access to the customers were cut off.

It was mentioned by a resident cum social activist from Ekkattuthangal in Chennai that trenches that were dug on arterial JN Road has forced the pedestrians to use the road and motorists to park their vehicles along the SWD leading to issues in the traffic movement. He revealed that the carriageway has shrunk and the traffic movement has slowed down. To reach Balaji Nagar, many would have to walk on the wooden plank placed across the trench becoz the road has been excavated.

In another important place, Ashok Nagar in Chennai, shops have come out on the half finished pavements above SWD constructed recently. Truth is that shops and commercial complexes have been cut off from the roads and this has affected the livelihood of many persons.

According to a shopkeeper on Dr. Ranga Road in Mylapore it was clear that huge trench was dug in front of his shop without any prior information. He added that he had to shut down his shop till the work gets completed.  Sandy soil has been dug out by the GCC authorities in places like Besant Nagar and Kalakshetra Colony etc and it was unacceptable. Without doing any feasibility study, GCC has been digging up several streets in Chennai having some water logging problem. This was brought out by a civic activist from Adyar.

Not only civic issues have been creating issues for the residents but also the safety.  In the month of June 2022, a doctor sustained minor injuries when his car fell into a trench that was dug out by GCC as a part of SWD work. This took place in Adyar. In another incident at K.K. Nagar, a pick- up truck got struck because a newly finished man hole gave away
