Valluvar Kottam flyover project in Chennai - Whats happening now?

Posted on: 29/Apr/2025 9:38:25 AM

For the purpose of the ongoing metro rail works, the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has put on hold the flyover project at Valluvar Kottam in Nungambakkam in Chennai.

The traffic diversions at Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam would be present till 2028 and hence it would be difficult to start the flyover project. This was mentioned by GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran. To ease the traffic congestion at the busy 4 way junction, the GCC would make the Kodambakkam High Road and Valluvar Kottam Road wider. Information collected is that the acquisition of lands for road widening is now going on and it will get over by the end of 2025.

In the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2022, the 570m long 4 lane flyover project was announced and it faced delays due to the issues in the acquisition of 2000 sqm of  lands. It is learnt that this flyover was supposed to connect Palmgrove hotel with the Potters area in Kodambakkam. The total project cost was expected to be more than Rs 200 cr.

Point is that the delay would improve the design of the flyover project and this was as per some officials from the department of bridges. The Valluvar Kottam flyover project would be extended to the Park Hotel junction with a circular rotunda at the centre. The officials pointed out that by this extension the 4 way junction would be cleared and there would not be any need to construct another flyover from the Park Hotel junction to Valluvar Kottam. For the sake of the road work, GCC is removing encroachments now.
