After Krishna water was released by Andhra Pradesh, the storage levels in the Poondi reservoir has gone up by nearly 10% since the first week of this year. The reservoir is one of the four key drinking water sources of Chennai.
20 cusecs of water from the Krishna river entered Tamil Nadu, at zero point in Uthukottai. The storage level of Poondi reservoir stood at 1,012 million cubic feet (mcft) on January 2. The water level reached 1,108 (mcft) on Saturday. The level in the reservoir, which stands at 34% against its total capacity, is likely to go up further with the Andhra government on Friday agreeing to release 3.33 thousand million cubic feet of Krishna water from its Kandaleru reservoir.
Says a Chennai Metro Water spokesperson, We increased supply to 650 MLD from 470 MLD after city`s reservoirs were recharged following rainfall in November. Now, we will decide on increasing daily supply once the reservoir levels stabilize.
Water from the Poondi reservoir will be channeled into the Red Hills treatment plant, before it is directed into the water distribution grid. Parts of Central Chennai will benefit from this.
According to officials, If the supply is stepped up further, water can also be diverted to Chembarambakkam and Cholavaram to cater to other parts of the city.
