Filmmaker Venkat Prabhu recently opened up about his love for cricket and its influence on his life and work during a candid conversation on the Sony Sports Tamil Podcast Cricket Petta. Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Venkat shared, “I never expected my first movie to be about cricket. Growing up, we played a lot of cricket. I was an off-spinner and middle-order batter, and even played for my university and local clubs.”
Discussing the filming of his blockbuster movie G.O.A.T., he revealed how cricket played a central role in shaping its key moments. “We wanted to showcase Chepauk Stadium in a fresh light, even attempting a fight scene on the roof. Since Chepauk’s canopy didn’t suit our needs, we recreated those scenes at Trivandrum Stadium. Shooting the bike sequence there was a unique experience. Being a big fan of CSK, it was a dream come true to have Actor Vijay Sir don a CSK jersey.”
Venkat also reflected on his cricketing idols, saying, “Kapil Dev was my first cricket hero. After his retirement, Sachin Tendulkar became the God of Cricket for me. His innings at Sharjah and the first double century in ODIs are unforgettable. Of course, Dhoni’s calmness and leadership as ‘Captain Cool’ are equally inspiring.”
The full interview with Venkat Prabhu will premiere on November 20, giving fans a deeper insight into his passion for cricket and cinema.
