The Chennai Metro Corporation has planned under the Smart City Programme to set up 250 Shared Cycles Stands before end October at Anna Nagar, Besant Nagar, and Marina Beach. The customers can use these cycles with the geo-fencing by unlocking them with a mobile QR Code on subscription. Similarly, they can drop the cycles within the stipulated areas.

In the 1st Phase of this plan, 5000 cycles are to be deployed in 500 locations in Chennai Metro City. The initial rates are fixed at Rs. 5 per km. it may be revised later. Monthly and yearly subscription systems will also be considered.

The Civic Body is had discussions with other departments – CMRL and City Police – to finalise the locations and the design of the stands. In this juncture, it may be noted that CMRL considers that this cycle stand facility is a huge success.

However, the officials also noted that this scheme was a failure in Coimbatore and some other cities. However, success is strongly expected in Chennai. Especially as good groundwork and research have been done. Another factor is the support from CMRL, which is also quite keen on this.

Before the commencement, the Chennai Metro Corporation is all set to launch an awareness campaign as well- cycling groups, students, and youngsters would all be involved. The tenders for the scheme were finalized a few months earlier and the contractors have been taken on board. A Hyderabad-based Consortium has been given the contract. Thus, this scheme is expected to be launched October in 3 locations and subsequently, will be extended to more locations.
