CMDA Begins Demolition of Illegal Floors in T Nagar

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has started demolishing seven unauthorised floors of a commercial building in T Nagar, following an order from the Madras High Court.

Originally, the builder was granted permission in 1990 to construct a basement, ground floor, mezzanine, and three upper floors. However, the construction exceeded the approved plan, resulting in eight upper floors, and partially built ninth and tenth floors.

Attempts by the builder to regularise the excess construction were rejected by CMDA and the state government. An appeal under Section 80-A of the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act was also dismissed.

Based on court directions, demolition has commenced, beginning with the partially built tenth floor.
