How comfortable will it be if you can book your suburban railway ticket on your smartphone and get the printed ticket without wanting to stand in queue at the railway station? This is soon going to be a reality in Chennai as the southern railway is all set to install machines at railway stations in Chennai city where commuters will find it very easy to procure tickets.

At present, for tickets booked via UTS application on Android, one has to show the digital ticket to checkers present in various railway stations. This comes with a few limitations, particularly when you don’t have battery charge in your phone. Furthermore, the commuter will be able to book the paperless ticket only when he is present within 50m to 2km radius in and around the railway station.

For enabling this facility, new machines designed from the hands of Centre for Railway Information Systems that makes use of Optical Character Recognition technology is to be set up. Using this, commuters can book tickets right from within the station.

To get the printed ticket, the user will have to opt for ‘book and print’. Once the ticket is booked, the mobile number from which the ticket was booked will be sent with an SMS. This machine comes with a provision to insert the phone for scanning the ticket code. Upon reading the code, there will be a paper ticket ejected out of a separate slot. So far, 3 such machines are installed at Chennai beach station each of which is priced Rs 50,000.
