Efforts on to clean up Yamuna

A series of meetings between the Delhi Government and Save Yamuna campaigners came to end on Thursday. The Government has agreed to put in more effort to make the river cleaner. Almost Rs. 1,500 crores over 20 years have already been spent on the project but the Yamuna is more polluted than ever before.

Studies show that the most important pollutant is untreated sewage. To tackle the problem, a canal will be built alongside the river from Wazirabad to Okhla. All untreated sewage will now be directed to the canal.

More water will be released into the Yamuna as activists say that the river needs more water to sustain its ecology. ‘We had demanded for 250 cusecs but the government agreed to release only half that figure. We wanted the additional water released from Hathini Kund but the government wants to release the water from one of the Ganga canals. This will not solve the real problem’, says Ravi Munja, a Save Yamuna campaigner.
