It has been nearly 6 years since the works regarding third and fourth lines between Tambaram and Chengalpet started. The latest news is that the new railway line between these 2 important stations would be thrown open. By this, the traffic congestion would be eased on the south-western suburban route. The lack of availability of railway tracks have slowed down the Chennai bound express trains from the southern districts in TN.
Truth is that once the new line is thrown open then the express trains would be speeded up and there would not be any delay. In the year 2010, the railways had proposed to develop lines 3 and 4 as the 2 tracks between Tambaram and Chengalpet exceeded 100% utilisation. The laying of railway tracks began in 2015 at a cost of an amount of Rs 256 crores is known. Issues in track alignment have led to the delay in the laying of tracks. The works should have been over by February 2017 itself. The third line would pass through a road over-bridge in several places is known.
It is learnt that the new line that was proposed to run closer to the pillar of 6-lane road over-bridge at Vandalur station violates safety norms. A distance of 2.36m must be there between track centre and permanent structures and this was as per railways safety guidelines.
Not many would have forgotten that in July 2018 as many as 7 footboard travellers lost their lives in 2 different incidents after hitting the concrete wall abutting the third line at St Thomas Mount station. Some delay in the land acquisition and this has led to slowing down works.
On 30th October 2020, a 11 km new line was completed in the Guduvancheri and Singaperumal Koil section and thrown open to the public. It must be taken into account that on 6th March 8km track between Singaperumal Koil and Chengalpet was cleared for operation. The new line would not only speed up the express trains but it would also increase the suburban services during the peak hours of time. Point to be noted is that 23 daily express specials and 7 weekly specials run through Tambaram- Chengalpet.
