Procuring the essential items from the fair ration price shops in Chennai has become an issue now for the senior citizens in some places belonging to Chennai. The reason for that was due to the failure of biometric authentication in the fair price ration shops. Many senior citizens now want this process to be made simple.

For 2 months, some senior citizens were not able to buy their quota of essential items from the fair price ration shops. This was according to a senior person belonging to Anna Nagar. It is learnt that the senior citizens were asked to go to the e-seva centre to update their biometrics. Travelling to many offices at an old age would not be easy for the senior citizens. It was later pointed out that the approval letters authorising another person to buy their quota of essential commodities on behalf of ration card holders was delayed.

The verification procedure for authorisation took several months of time and this was as per a resident belonging to Anna Nagar West. For the sake of approval, 4 or 5 application forms have to be submitted.

It was mentioned by Mr. V. Rajagopal, president, Anna Nagar Western Extension Phase-2 Residents Welfare Association that procedures must be simplified and authorisation and verification process for the representatives must be done within a day. For those senior persons who would not be able to visit the fair price ration shops, the civil supplies department might consider delivering the essential items at the doorsteps.

Truth is that a person whose name was on the ration card would not be denied essential items. This was according to some sources belonging to the civil supplies department. Shopkeepers at the fair price ration shops must register biometric failure if the biometrics do not match and they must proceed to give the essential items to the public.
