The much-awaited 9-days celebration of the Navarathri festival has commenced in a grand manner. Special dance and music programmes are being organised.

Navarathri is being celebrated throughout the country from today (Thursday, 26th September).

Large lamps have been lit in all the major Sakthi or Amman Temples throughout the country. These lamps will glow bright and divine throughout the 9 days of Navarathri. The public will worship the Goddess Durga and offer their prayers. The commencement of the festival was exactly at 12 midnight on the start of Thursday. Many people participated in the in the Garba and Dandiya dance programmes.

In Tamil Nadu, it has been a long-time tradition to arrange dolls in steps, perform daily poojas, prepare special dishes and offer prayers. As such, the various thoroughfares and streets are full of dolls and doll displays. In a special exhibition conducted in Coimbatore, huge crowds participated on the occasion.

However, one major complaint from the public is that the prices of the dolls have gone up due to GST.

The special feature of this year’s doll sales and display are the dolls of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
