Very soon, it is likely that your residential and professional addresses are to get a digital tagging. This move is initiated by the Aadhar authority and the tagging intended to be one’s identification.
The Postal Department falling under the Ministry of Communications is performing the necessary activities where each and every property shall be assigned with a 6-character alphanumeric digital address pertaining to 3 postal pin code locations.
How does it work?
The address will be assigned with e-locations as those on Google Maps. Later on, the likeliness of linking it with the other information like title of property, property ownership, tax records, electricity, water or gas utilities, and so on.
eLoc - What is it?
eLoc is a short form of address that shrinks it into just 6 alphabets and numbers. This can in fact be added to your visiting card or website that tags your residential or office address. When someone wants to reach you, all he needs to do is feed the eLoc on the MapmyIndia map portal or the mobile app. This will instantly give the user the turn-by-turn direction to your exact location, voila!
Delhi and Noida are done
For 2 postal pin codes and Delhi and one in Noida, the plan is cleared so far. In the next phase of works, the scope of project will be expanded. This digital identity will look something like UV98F8. It will be e-enabled that can be used in association with your present postal address.
The department would probably use the results for developing digital address format. This will be then utilized for a project set to get rolled out in national-level, reads a letter from the additional director-general, Abhishek Kumar Singh.
Quick and easy to identify complex addresses
The MD of MapmyIndia, Rakesh Verma said with this e-linkage, it is going to be very easy for identifying complex address, and also pave way for linking them to various kinds of amenities and services.

Pilot project to test project effectiveness
Most of the digital addresses in India are tough to be read and understood. Say, for instance, addresses like Pocket XX, Janakpuri, 2A, etc. are tough to understand, whereas the same can be easily comprehended with by using digital address like 9YMTYEM. This can be linked with several facilities such as property tax, civic amenities, and so on, the company officials say.
The primary objective of the project is to explain and demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of digital addressing system, as understood by the approval letter for the Pilot project.
Department to hold data ownership
It further states that the department shall hold complete ownership of all data or reports, documents of any kind that are generated in physical or electronic forms. The data shall not be used for any kind of commercial purpose for any private company.
The postal department would back the entire project by providing data about beat maps, details and information on mapping physical and digital address and providing necessary amenities through their ground staff.
