Madhavaram bus terminus on hold

The lookout for a new bus terminus to ease the traffic at Koyambedu goes on as the Madhavaram proposal has been put in the back seat for now. The CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) had identified two areas one in Velachery and one in Madhavaram to build new bus termini.

The Velachery terminus was shelved as reports said that it could affect the aligned of the proposed monorail. Now, studies show that the location of the Madhavaram proposal is not ideal. The report , conducted by Mahindra, said that the project may not be viable as vehicular traffic, particularly lorry and container traffic, is high and may affect the free movement of buses to and from the terminus.

A CMDA official said, ‘The facility that was to come up on an 8-acre vacant site at Madhavaram truck terminal has been deferred as it appears to be non-conducive at this point of time. Once the linking up of Chennai-Kolkata highway (NH5) and work on the outer ring road is completed, truck movement would be reduced along the Madhavaram stretch and the project might take off.’
